Derek Jeter Day

I was glad to watch from the comfort of my home as Derek Jeter was honored at Yankee Stadium yesterday. He has been a fine player and he is a fine human being. I was glad to see the assemblage of athletes and celebrities who turned out to recognize him. I was glad to see him get a base hit on his first at bat. I was glad to hear the roar of the crowd who had watched him play his entire career in Yankee pinstripes.

And most of all, I was glad to see my Kansas City Royals recognize Jeter by pasting the Yankees 2-0, and continuing their march to a playoffs that could very well include the Royals and exclude the Yankees. Now there is something to celebrate, eh Derek?

Well, Margie, I may be but tonight's game is testing my long suffering but unwavering faithfulness as a fan. This drubbing hurt.

My Blog:

Here I blog, somewhat randomly, about politics, social justice, peace, faith, books, coffee, baseball, and much more.

My Home:

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; family moved to the U.S. when I was a young teen; lived most of my life in historic Independence, Missouri, home and final resting place of plain-spoken President Harry S Truman; town is also the point of origin for the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails--hence this is a good place to ponder new frontiers. Recently moved to nearby Grain Valley, Missouri, more suburban than its name implies.

My Heart:

Still learning and reflecting as I wind ever so slowly into the twilight of life; exploring with others how to embrace heritage, value diversity, and pursue peace; trying to coax the Great American Novel (now more likely to be the Great American Short Story) from out of my soul and onto paper; blogging primarily for my own enrichment and in hopes of discovering fresh ideas and shared dreams.

My Career:

Worked most of my life as a denominational officer at the international headquarters of Community of Christ, privileged to serve over eight years as its president; now retired; traveled widely abroad and worked with groups large and small, young and old; enjoy using stories and humor to teach simple rules affirming the worth of all persons in global community.

My Family:

Married to a richly gifted and mercifully tolerant woman; blessed by two accomplished and creative adult sons and a wonderful daughter-in-law; irrationally devoted to two beautiful granddaughters; live in a household graced by one cat and the memory of others, some of whom were insufficiently grateful for their liberation from the animal shelter, but each of whom undoubtedly experienced their own dark night of the soul--hence we seem to understand each other.
